Probing Dust in the Atmosphere of Brown Dwarfs through Polarization
نویسنده
چکیده
Theoretical analysis and observational evidences indicate that a brown dwarf with effective temperature greater than 1300 K would have dust cloud in its atmosphere. In this letter, we show that dust scattering should yield polarized continuum radiation from the relatively warm brown dwarfs and the polarized flux profile could be a potential diagnosis tool for the optical and the physical properties of dust grains. The degree of polarization due to multiple scattering will be more in the optical region if the particle size is small while significant polarization should be detected in the infra-red region if the particle size is large. It is pointed out that the departure from sphericity in the shape of the object due to rapid rotation and due to tidal effect by the companion in a binary system ensures the disc integrated polarization to be non-zero. Explaining the Observed Polarization from Brown Dwarfs by Single Dust Scattering
Recent observation of linear optical polarization from brown dwarfs confirms the dust hypothesis in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs with effective temperature higher than 1400 K. The observed polarization could arise due to dust scattering in the rotation induced oblate photosphere or due to the scattering by non-spherical grains in the spherical atmosphere or by the anisotropic distribution of...
متن کاملPolarization of L Dwarfs by Dust Scattering
The degree of polarization in L dwarfs of spectral types L0–L6 resulting from dust scattering in a rotationinduced oblate photosphere is calculated. Assuming that forsterite is the main condensate, we derive the atmospheric dust distribution for different spectral types based on a chemical equilibrium model. The degree of polarization at optical is then calculated using a single-scattering mode...
متن کاملObservation of R-band Variability of L Dwarfs
We report, for the first time, photometric variability of L dwarfs in R band. Out of three L1 dwarfs (2MASS 1300+19, 2MASS 1439+19, and 2MASS 1658+70) observed, we have detected R band variability in 2MASS 1300+19 and 2MASS 1439+19. The objects exhibit variability of amplitude ranging from 0.01 mag to 0.02 mag. Object 2MASS 1658+70, turns out to be non-variable in both R and I band. However, mo...
متن کاملEvolutionary models for very-low-mass stars and brown dwarfs with dusty atmospheres
We present evolutionary calculations for very-low-mass stars and brown dwarfs based on synthetic spectra and non-grey atmosphere models which include dust formation and opacity, i.e. objects with Teff < ∼ 2800 K. The interior of the most massive brown dwarfs is shown to develop a conductive core after ∼ 2 Gyr which slows down their cooling. Comparison is made in optical and infrared color-magni...
متن کاملOptical Linear Polarization of Late M-and L-type Dwarfs
We report on the linear polarimetric observations in the Johnson I-band filter of 44 ultracool dwarfs with spectral types between M6 and L7.5, corresponding to effective temperatures in the range 2800–1400 K, and one M4.5-type star. Based on our measurements of polarization (P) and their associated error bars (σ P), eleven (10 L and 1 M) dwarfs appear to have significant linear polarization (P/...
